Experience

I studied fine art for two years before being captivated by Architecture. While I set my brushes down in my 20's and focused on designing buildings, I never stopped critically looking at the world around me through the eyes of a painter. I continued to develop a deeper visual understanding of the natural world around us and the emotional impact it exerts on all of us.

Process

I primarily paint with acrylics on stretched canvas. I frequently paint landscapes of my favorite regions of Texas, the gulf coast, the hill country, and Big Bend. I am particularly drawn to the rich and often ambiguous light of morning and evening twilight.

Most of my paintings are based on photographs I have taken over the years of these rich landscapes.

The act of painting

Every painting is an adventure. A white canvas is exhilarating and just a bit daunting. I start with an image in mind but what happens on the canvas always takes on a life of its own. I go with what is working on the canvas which at some point usually departs from the photo.

Somewhere on this journey a moment or two of doubt will creep in, where the painting just does not seem to work. I have learned to just keep painting and trust my eye to eventually bring the painting to life.
